From summer 2026 at the earliest, you will be able to order the e-ID free of charge via the swiyu app. You will need a valid Swiss identity document (ID card or passport) or a residence permit.
How it works:
- Install the swiyu app on your smartphone.
- Have your valid identity document ready to confirm your identity. You will need to scan your document and make a short video recording of your face.
- Send the recorded data via the swiyu app to the designated state verification authority.
- If everything is in order, you will receive the e-ID immediately on your smartphone. It will then be available in your swiyu app. The entire process usually takes only a few minutes.
In rare cases, an additional check may be required, which can take a few days.
Identity verification in person:
If you do not wish to complete the identity verification online, you can also do it directly at your passport office.

No. Just as you cannot sign a document with an ID card, you cannot sign electronically with the e-ID either. However, it does allow you to obtain an electronic signature from a certified provider which you can use to sign documents legally.

No; in principle, there is no obligation to obtain or use an e-ID. However, if specific legislation states that an e-ID is required, then a public service could be made exclusively digital. Otherwise, all services must also be offered in analogue form.

No, the e-ID is not a travel document. However, in the medium term, the federal government intends to make travel documents available in electronic form as well.
