Fourth meeting of the Switzerland–United Kingdom Joint Committee on the Citizens' Rights Agreement

Bern-Wabern, 13.11.2025 — The fourth meeting of the Switzerland–United Kingdom Joint Committee on the Citizens' Rights Agreement took place on 13 November. The parties agreed not to extend the provision of the agreement that entitles service providers to continue their economic activity in the territory of the other state. This decision applies to contracts concluded before 2021.

The Citizens' Rights Agreement was concluded in 2019 between Switzerland and the United Kingdom to protect the acquired rights of their citizens after the UK withdrawal from the EU. The agreement allows for the cross-border provision of services without a permit for up to 90 working days per year. This applies to contracts concluded before 1 January 2021 and which commenced before that date. This provision will remain in force until 31 December 2025. However, Switzerland and the UK have agreed not to extend the specified application period, since service providers from both countries have made little use of this provision since the agreement came into force.

Service providers from Switzerland and the UK can continue to provide new services in the territory of the other country in accordance with the Services Mobility Agreement, which was recently extended until 31 December 2029.
