swiyu – Notes on the design and name of the e-ID and trust infrastructure

The e-ID and its trust infrastructure must be secure and useful. These characteristics should be reflected in the design and name. The design is based on the federal CD (uniform, binding set of rules for the federal government's appearance, link) with its brand values of quality, efficiency and transparency. These brand values are complemented by participation, Swissness, trust and future and translated as follows with regard to colour palette, typography and design:

The colour palette is based on the Confederation's basic colours, supplemented by extra brightness, clarity and accent colours. The accent colours are taken from the holographic security feature of existing Swiss identity documents.

Multicoloured, dynamic gradations are used on the e-ID credential. They represent the diversity and vitality of the individual identities of the population in Switzerland. The brand meets the accessibility requirements. This is ensured, among other things, by the defined colour contrasts and values.

The typefaces are neutral, clear and modern, inspired by traditional Swiss typographic design and optimised for digital use. They guarantee readability and accessibility thanks to different font styles that offer a wide range for creating hierarchy and structure. The use of fonts follows the design approach of skeuomorphism. In skeuomorphism, the design of the new object imitates the shape of a familiar object. For the credentials, therefore, a monospace variant is used, inspired by the Swiss passport and other identity documents. The wallet app, the ‹envelope› for the credentials, is designed in a sans-serif font.

The appearance of the E-ID, electronic wallet and other user interfaces inspires confidence and security thanks to the precision and quality of the visual design and clear usability. The positive and visionary look whets the appetite for new things.

The federal government's electronic wallet is called SWIYU. SWIYU is an artificial word and contains three important components: SWI stands for Switzerland, I stands for me, identity and innovation and YU stands for you and unity. The central I is also the basic element of the logo. The nine vertical lines - or nine I's - suggest a Swiss cross and thus create the connection between the individuals who together make up Switzerland.
